So I was chatting with my brother the other day and we got to discussing his job. He works for a supplement store (whose name shall remain anonymous). I was really disturbed to hear how he was trained and what was expected of him at the store. I felt like it was something you all deserved to hear and know.
I didn’t get much detail but basically he has a “quota” of a specific brand of supplements he must sell within an allotted time frame. The supplements are specific to that particular store. It doesn’t matter whether those are the BEST supplement for the consumer or not, he is simply supposed to push and sell that brand in order to meet his quota.
I found this upsetting because I know from my own experience at the beginning of my fitness journey, as well as the questions/asks I’ve gotten on here… that many of us go into supplement stores and ask employees which product is “best”, trusting that they will know. They give an answer and most people trust what the employee is telling them because well, why would they steer you wrong?….. but if the product they are pushing is simply because they need to meet their quota to keep their job.. they are being deceptive. I am by no means blaming the employees! The company is training them after all.
The lesson to take from this is, do your due diligence!! Before going into a supplement store, do research about the product you intend to buy. Read about the pros & cons, read reviews of a variety of brands and know before you step into the store what you should be looking for.
This applies to all areas of life! You wouldn’t go to a car dealership and trust everything the salesperson tells you! You should always read Consumer Reports and do your own research before you allow the dealership to influence your decision.
